We like to meet up with our high school friends, Anne and Mark, who live a little bit of a distance from us by meeting somewhere in the middle between Norton and Marshfield, MA. Middleboro seems to be right about the middle. I also have family in Middleboro. Whenever we find ourselves visiting family there, we try to hook up with Anne and Mark.
We really lucked out when I went onto google maps to find a restaurant that was in the vicinity, and The Cabin popped up. I had never heard of it before, so I browsed the menu. It looked as though it had something for everyone, pizza, steak, seafood, pub food. They even have indoor and patio seating. We made a plan to meet here for an early dinner.
We had a get together at my niece’s house in Middleboro. When I told my family that we were meeting friends at The Cabin, I was not expecting the response I got. Everyone told us what a wonderful place this was – great food and atmosphere. They even told me that the owner comes around to the tables to chat. It made me think, then why is this place seemingly a secret? I think that the locals want to keep it to themselves!
Well, we entered the cute little blue, one floor log cabin and were greeted with smiles, laughter and an overall feeling of warmth. The owner/manager, Jon, greeted us at the hostess station and walked us to the table where a lovely waitress came and took our drink order, white and red sangria and old fashioneds. Yum!
Jon came back over and explained the menu and specials to us which was a nice touch. He explained that this is a “from scratch kitchen”, meaning that the food may take a little longer to prepare, but you know it will be fresh. Honestly, it didn’t take any longer than most places we have been. When our food arrived, it was clear that this was no ordinary place. All was amazing!!
We opted for an appetizer special, buffalo cauliflower, which we loved.
For dinner, I ordered the Surf and Turf – grilled steak tips smothered in mushrooms and onions with fried shrimp (or clam strips or scallops). Mark ordered the Baked Seafood Trio – haddock, scallops and shrimp with breadcrumbs covered with lobster Newburg sauce (or you can choose to order it gratinee style – Swiss cheese, tomato & scallions). Jim ordered the Haddock, baked with breadcrumbs and lobster Newburg sauce (also can choose to order gratinee style). Anne got the Fried Captain’s Combo, where you choose two: Haddock, shrimp, clam strips, whole belly clams, calamari, or scallops. Anne chose fried scallops and clams. This was served with fries, onion rings, Cole slaw and tartar sauce. Of course, we all picked at it and helped her eat this enormous platter of deliciousness. The seafood was lightly battered and not greasy at all. They also serve a Fisherman’s Feast that comes with all the above options as well as clam chowder, a stuffed quahog and cornbread. You can order portions for one or two people.
Dinner entrees are served with served with two sides. We tried mashed potatoes, spinach, spring vegetables, fries and onion rings. All came with corn bread that was a nice treat.
We couldn’t fit dessert, but they all looked superb!!
Own our way to our cars, the owner came out to bring forgotten leftovers to a customer, so we grabbed a picture of him with The Cabin sign.
The Cabin also serves pub food and pizza that looked amazing as well. They also have a large gluten free menu, including gluten free seafood options.
We highly recommend trying The Cabin next time you are in the vicinity!!
Until next time!!
