In New England the weather is unpredictable. Even though we have four seasons, often they blur into one another – cold when it should be hot, hot when it should be snowing, and rain, lots and lots of rain! So, we have learned to live in the moment and appreciate the nice weather whenever we have it. This past weekend was nice for the end of April, so we decided on our favorite pastime, to get all the grandchildren together. We had them over for smores to kick-off the Spring and Summer seasons and hopefully better weather.
There is something so nostalgic about roasting marshmallows over an open flame. We keep a supply of graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows in our cabinet at all times. We replenish often as we never know when the next perfect roasting day will be here. Really, are you even from New England if you don’t?
Some of the grandkids like to just eat the roasted marshmallows (some even prefer them burnt), others love the smores, and some just try to get away with all the chocolate. Some like making smores but not eating them, so the adults get the benefit of having those ones. The most troublesome part about the kids roasting marshmallows is managing them with long sticks. They don’t do anything intentionally, but we all tend to end up with sticky marshmallow in our hair and on our clothes when a wild stick comes our way. It’s all part of the fun.
Safety is always in the forefront and the kids all know the rules regarding the fire in our Solo Stove – other than the baby who is a new walker, and he is watched very closely. They are pretty good about being careful near the pit area.
Until next time!
