We live a town over from Duxbury and often visit for some restaurants, etc… We had some business in Duxbury so decided to grab a quick lunch and check out a cute little Irish store that we have heard good things about.
The Galway Girl Irish Shop
We live in Marshfield Massachusetts which is the South Shore of Boston and considered part of the Irish Riviera. The South Shore is called the Irish Riv. due to the high number of people of Irish descent who have settled here. But strangely, there are not a lot of businesses dedicated to this title. There are only a handful of Irish pubs and significantly less stores to purchase Irish goods and food. We know some folks who have immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland, and they miss having the ability to easily buy some of their favorite native foods.
The Galway Girl is an Irish store that fills at least some of that gap. In this store anything you purchase comes directly from Ireland. Foods such as blood sausages, black and white pudding (breakfast sausage), and back bacon are found in the refrigerated section. Staples such as ham glaze, curry sauce, Irish teas and fruit preserves, among many other things, are stacked on the shelves. An abundance of imported snacks like Irish cookies and crackers, “Tayto” potato chips and various chocolates are stacked throughout the store. My favorite part are all the trinkets, jewelry, dinner ware, scally caps and Irish knit sweaters that they import. We purchased 2 shamrock teacups and a matching tea bag/spoon holder to use with our afternoon tea (a habit we picked up since retirement).
The Galway Girl Irish Shop is definitely worth a visit to discover all the cute things they have to offer, and during your visit, check out some of the dining spots in the same complex. We chose to go to The Anchor which is a few doors down from the shop, but there are pizza shops too. And don’t forget to go to Farfar’s across the street for some homemade Danish ice cream (it hadn’t opened for the season when we went, or we certainly would have gone).
The Anchor
While at The Galway Girl, we decided to have lunch at The Anchor. The Anchor is a cute little restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner. It is decorated with large, framed fish prints tying in the nautical theme. We sat at the bar and the bartender was so friendly and nice. The manager came over and checked in a couple times as well.
The sangria was delicious, white for me and red for Jim. We started with Chicken Avocado Eggrolls that came with two perfectly cooked eggrolls that were much larger than expected. So good!! These eggrolls were delicious, and we will probably get them again next time we go back. We planned on getting our own lunch selections, but we didn’t think we could handle it after the eggrolls.
One of my husband’s favorite dishes of all time is the cheeseburger at Oysterman, a restaurant around the corner from The Anchor. The Oysterman burger is two smashed burgers with, American cheese, lettuce, onion and house made pickles, special sauce and a sesame seed bun, tasting a lot like a big Mac without the stomachache. Well, it just so happens that The Anchor is a sister restaurant to Oysterman, and The Anchor had the Oysterman cheeseburger on the menu! Blacksmith Tavern in Pembroke is another sister restaurant. We ordered the Oysterman burger to share, and it came out already split, each half on its own plate with fries. It was nice that they did that without us having to ask or pay for a splitting fee.
They have other burgers on the menu, but we couldn’t move past this one to consider any of the others. Their menu is heavy on seafood for entrees but a great combo of options for the sandwich, salad and appetizer section with plenty of chicken, meat and even vegetarian options available. The prices are fairly reasonable and the atmosphere was relaxing with great music playing, friendly staff and great food. Give The Anchor a try next time you are in the neighborhood!!
Enjoy!!!
