Nosh and Grog is a trendy yet casual restaurant and bar in The Village Shoppes of Canton, in Canton, MA. This is where the towns of Canton, Sharon and Stoughton converge. The restaurant serves upscale fresh American type fare in their “from scratch” kitchen, creates delicious craft cocktails and has a long list of wine and local beers that change regularly. They even offer late night pizzas starting at 9pm every night but Sunday, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Nosh and Grog uses locally sourced food from regional farms such as, Wild Robbin and Silverwood Organic Farms in Sherborn, Tangerini Farm in Millis, Longwater Farm in N. Easton, and Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury, to name a few.
Jim and I met our friends, Deb and Steve at Nosh and Grog on a Wednesday evening. We started with some cocktails at the bar. We love to see the various garnishes at a serious craft cocktail bar, and Nosh and Grog did not disappoint. I had the Berries & Smoke which I asked to be made only mildly smokey, and it was perfect. It is made with mezcal which is a smokey tequila, berries, mulled wine and lime. Jim and Steve had Old Fashioneds made with Duck Fat Washed Bourbon, maple and bitters that they said were fantastic. Deb went for a Czech Pilsner from Moat Mountain Brewing in North Conway, NH. Our bartender, Matt, was a great guy who was very attentive and took some time to chat with us as we were there early, and the restaurant wasn’t busy yet. We were told it tends to get busy between 6 and 7pm. Even though we had made a reservation for a table, we opted to stay at the bar for our meal as well. We had a nice corner area which made conversing easy.
Of course we had to start out with a charcuterie board. They had 6 boards to choose from – 3 charcuterie boards, a butter board, a mezze board and the mother board that is combination of all of the above. We chose the Grand Charcuterie Board with 3 meats, 3 cheeses, homemade crackers and accoutrements. We completely enjoyed the selections as we chatted. Any of these boards would be great for a group of friends who come in to hang on the posh couches and have a few drinks with some appetizers to pick at.
On to the entrees. Deb and I got the Blonde Bolognese made with wild boar and lamb that was cooked perfectly. The whipped lemon ricotta on the top made a nice creamy texture when mixed in. Jim ordered the Kimche Udon with shrimp. This was very good but overly spicey for our taste. Steve got the Pork Coppa Steak that was nicely presented, though a little pink for pork and not as spiced as it could have been. Everything that we saw coming out of the kitchen looked fabulous. Three of us had wine with dinner – me my trusty Pinot Grigio and the guys had a red from Rioja, Spain that they really enjoyed. We were too full for dessert, so we passed on that.
Nosh and Grog is trendy and modern but with a warm inviting atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The cocktails were superb. The Blonde Bolognese was great. The Udon would probably be really good for someone who loves spicy food, but the pork was a little bland and too pink for our liking. Our overall collective opinion on our experience at Nosh and Grog was that it was well worth the visit even though it was heavy on the wallet. We will go back and maybe try brunch next time.
