Arriving in Mykonos by ferry, we were welcomed by a line of 6 historic windmills to the Town of Mykonos. Our hotel, Absolute Mykonos, was up the hill behind the windmills. It even had a windmill on the property that is an adorable guest house. We walked down to the restaurants along the water of the Town of Mykonos where there is a walkway along the edge of the dining patios overhanging the water. These restaurants get a lot more lively as the night goes on as Mykonos is known as a party island.
We meandered through the alleys and checked out different restaurants, bars and stores. We had a driver take us on a tour of the island. We went out to a lighthouse, checked out the area where the locals live and patronize, walked through Nammos – the high-end shopping center that closed for the season the night before and drove us through the town of Ornos. We spent a lot of time at the beautiful pool that our hotel had as well. There were gorgeous sunset views from here.
Restaurants
Jimmy’s Gyros – a tiny gyro joint with about 10 seats on the elevated sidewalk. The gyros were very good.
Mamaloukas – a swanky, outdoor, tree covered restaurant. Great food and good service.
D’Angelos – Italian eatery with excellent pizzas and Greek salads.
Katerina’s – good drinks with a bay view.
Ornos
The beach clubs that Mykonos is known for had closed the day before we arrived, so we had a driver take us around to an area that had some restaurants on a beach in Ornos. This was a lovely little area with a boardwalk, umbrellas and beach chairs in front of nice restaurants. We made a reservation to come back that night for dinner at Kuzina on the beach, which was very good. Our ride home didn’t answer the phone, so we ended up having the restaurant call us two taxis. One taxi driver was in such a hurry, he started to pull away before Sue was in the car and ran over the back of her flip flop and pant leg. He only stopped because we were all screaming. Luckily Sue was not hurt. This could have turned out to be a bad ending.
Restaurant
Kuzina – right on the beach in Ornos. Food was excellent.
Mykonos was beautiful, but we didn’t get to explore the beach clubs which may have made us love the island more. Next stop, Paros!!!!!
