at Boston Bonbon
I am always looking for things to do with my oldest granddaughter, especially now that she is a teenager. She is 7 years older than the next oldest grandkids, and the 7 youngest all have each other to play with. She loves to bake, like me, so for Christmas, my daughter got us each a gift certificate to a French macaron making class at Boston Bonbon in Cohasset, MA. These classes fill up really fast, so if you see any of Rita’s classes at Boston Bonbon, jump on it. Rita also offers other classes, such as dumpling and noodle making. What a great gift! My daughter knows that I prefer experiences over things, so this was perfect. It also let me spend some precious time with a teenager – we all know how difficult it can be to get a teen to want to spend time with family.
We pulled up to the crooked little building on Depot St. in Cohasset and thought, are we in the right place? Well, yes we were. Boston Bonbon has a cute little set up inside, ready to teach 8-10 bakers how to make delicious, delicate macarons. Once inside, Rita explained the history and process of making macarons. We then paired up at a mixer and started creating.
Rita had premeasured the ingredients for the ease of the class then emailed the recipes. She then walked around and coached each group in the proper technique of mixing, piping, drying, baking and filling the little colorful pastries. Drying takes 1-1 1/2 hours so we broke for lunch and walked to one of the restaurants close by. We toured through Cohasset center shops and did a little shopping too.
My granddaughter insisted on being the chef and me the assistant for the entire class, and she did a great job. We filled ours with a variety of vanilla filling, chocolate ganache and raspberry filling. They turned out delicious! I would not have attempted to bake macarons on my own, so this class was perfect for showing tricks of the trade. I can’t wait to try to make some in my own kitchen with my granddaughter, but I may be relegated to assistant again, maybe even forever!
Until the next adventure!
