The Best Food Ever!!!
We are a bunch of foodies, so trying all this Mediterranean food was incredible. As we said before, we did not have a bad bite on this vacation. Firstly, Debbie booked all the hotels and made certain that breakfast was included in each one. This was especially helpful with a group of 8 who all rise and get moving at different times. We would just wander down (or up) to breakfast when ready and at some point, we would see the others and make our plan for the day.We ate most of our meals together as group of 8 and didn’t have trouble getting reservations the day of or even just walking in.
We made it a mission to make sure we tried Greek salad at each restaurant we went to. All were different. Only one salad had any greens (lettuce or arugula) in it. Some had blocks of feta, some crumbled and others had creamy feta. All were wonderful with the freshest red tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, olives and oregano.
We tried the typical light fare for some lunches, gyros and souvlaki. Other times we couldn’t help ourselves but to order big meals. Often we would split these to get to try everything. Most of the restaurants offered complimentary dessert and after dinner drinks.
Most strarted with bread and olives or tzatziki.
Dinners in Athens were phenomenal, mixed with traditional Greek dishes like moussaka, spanakopita, pastitsio octopus and lamb chops, though there was plenty of seafood options too.
Food on the islands was more coastal with fish, calamari, shrimp and octopus being the stars. It was more difficult to find those traditional dishes on the islands.
Pizza is a big deal in Greece as well. Who knew?
Sweets are a big deal as well in Greece. We tried their traditional desserts – baklava, loukoumades (Greek donuts), orange cake and rice pudding. All so good.
And of course, there was always a reason to cheers, “Yamas”!!
We still think about all the great food we had – so much so that we had our kids over and made pastitsio and baklava. We got the seal of approval from my Greek son-in-law that it was one of the best he had (maybe just saying that to his MIL).
Thank goodness we had to walk and hike so much. Miraculously, after eating and drinking our way through Greece we didn’t gain much weight at all.
Until next time, Yamas!!!!
